Word-of-mouth marketing: How to get them talking about your café, bar or restaurant

A recent Nielsen report shows that 92% of consumers believe recommendations from friends and family over all forms of advertising. In another study, 64% of marketing executives indicated that they believe word of mouth is the most effective form of marketing. So the question is: how can your café, bar or restaurant master what has been identified as the most valuable form of marketing — the one that consumers trust above all others?

  • Engage

  • Firstly, engage with the patrons of your café, bar or restaurant. Listen to what they are telling you and be part of the discussion. Are your customers on social media? Be part of the conversations about your café, bar or restaurant and constantly respond to your followers. Be a presence in their lives! Encourage your employees to take an interest in your customers and build connections. A smile and a few words are sometimes enough to brighten someone’s day; and this will not only make them come back, but they might share their experience with family and friends.

  • Improve

  • Give your customers good reasons to talk about your café, bar or restaurant. Deliver excellent food and drinks, great customer service, amazing atmosphere and social elevation – you choose! Try to understand your customers and find out what they like about your premises, menu, food/drinks and staff, then provide whatever it is they need from you. Actions speak louder than words. If you are doing something better than the competition, or you’re doing something different, people will be eager to share their positive experiences. Promotions, sales and launches also spark interest in potential customers.

  • Empower

  • If people are not talking about you, they are forgetting about you. So give your customers different ways to talk and share. Let patrons know that they are important to you and that sharing their opinions is important to you. Online reviews, social media and email surveys are only some of the tools you could use to help customers move the conversations around.
